Treat manure as a managed nutrient stream
Good waste management protects animals, workers, neighbours, soil and water. The correct system depends on whether waste is solid, slurry, liquid effluent, used litter, mortalities or aquaculture water.
Waste-management hierarchy
- Prevent excess: stop drinker leaks, rain entry, feed spills and unnecessary wash water.
- Separate streams: keep clean roof water away from manure and dirty yards.
- Collect frequently: scrape, remove wet bedding and clean high-load areas before decomposition intensifies.
- Contain safely: use an adequately sized, structurally sound store protected from runoff and overflow.
- Treat appropriately: compost solids, separate solids from liquids, use anaerobic digestion where feasible, or use another lawful designed process.
- Recover value: apply nutrients according to soil/crop need, use compost, or capture biogas—not uncontrolled dumping.
- Document: record quantities, treatment, destination, application date, weather and complaints.

Land application is not disposal
Base application on manure analysis, soil testing, crop nutrient requirement, field slope, buffers, weather and regulatory limits. Avoid saturated, flooded or high-runoff conditions. Excess nutrients can pollute water and waste money.
Worker and community protection
Manure stores and enclosed pits can contain lethal gases. Restrict access, provide training and never enter confined manure spaces without a formal confined-space safety system. Maintain a complaint log and investigate recurring odour, flies or runoff at the source.
